The Ressano Garcia border, which links Mozambique and South Africa, could see a peak in the number of national and foreign citizens entering the country during the festive season, starting today and tomorrow.
According to the authorities, more than 12,000 Mozambicans who work in the mines and agricultural sector in South Africa are expected in the country.
In a NewsJoão Almeida, the delegate of the Ministry of Labor in South Africa, said that the mines will close for collective vacations on Monday, December 23, "but many miners are anticipating their return to the country for this weekend".
"After the festive season, the return to South Africa is scheduled for January 3rd of next year," he added.
In the meantime, according to the source, on the first day of 2025, some workers will return to their posts, given the distances they will have to travel from Mozambique to the area where the companies they work for in South Africa are located.
"We expect January 2nd to be the peak day for the workers' return to the mines. Not all of them will travel by bus, as many of them have their own transport and travel alone or in the company of colleagues. Others, by choice, will use public transport," said the delegate from the Ministry of Labor in South Africa.
