Digital platforms, specifically international tourist service platforms, will be obliged to pay taxes on their transactions related to tourist resorts operating in the country.
The initiative arose from the Mozambican state's observation that these companies specializing in travel bookings operate in the country, earn commissions but are not taxed.
The information was shared by the director of the Digital Economy Taxation Unit at the Mozambican Tax Authority (AT), Américo Ambasse, to the newspaper "Notícias", where he said that the measure aims to control tourism transactions.
Among the international platforms listed are digital platforms such as Airbnb, Booking, TripAdvisor and others that operate in Mozambique.
The aforementioned platforms play important roles in the travel and tourism sector, connecting travelers to services and experiences in a given region.
This measure covers earnings made by foreign digital platforms such as Booking, Trivago and others that broker accommodation in Mozambique.
This initiative is part of the taxation of the digital economy, a segment that is becoming increasingly important around the world, including Mozambique.
"When we make a reservation and pay the corresponding amount outside the country, these platforms receive commissions. Although they are not physically in Mozambique, it is expected that income earned in the country will be subject to tax, depending on the commissions earned," said Ambasse.
The AT has been identifying ways to control and tax commercial activities based on the Internet, keeping pace with technological and economic developments.
