Venâncio Mondlane calls for a two-day general strike in the streets, starting on October 24th

Venâncio Mondlane convoca greve geral, nas ruas, por dois dias, a partir do dia 24 de Outubro

This morning, the presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, announced the second stage of protests against "kidnappings, abductions, tear gas and real bullets against an unarmed and defenceless people" and called for a general strike for two days, from next Thursday (24) until Friday (25).

He warned that in this phase, people should take to the streets and protest peacefully. And, unlike the previous ones, there won't be a concentration point. He explained that the idea is to throw off the Defense and Security Forces (FDS) so that they don't send riot police to the gathering places. "There won't be enough armored vehicles".

According to Mondlane, this period is a unique window and opportunity for the people to demonstrate that "it is the people who hold power".

He proposes that all state and private institutions suspend their economic activities.

"From Thursday 24th, we're going to raise the bar. We're going to paralyze the country for two days. This time it's a stoppage of all work, in the public and private sectors. And we're going to take to the streets to demonstrate with placards. This time, we won't have concentration points like we do. All 154 districts should go out to demonstrate," he called.

This call is intended to take place on the days scheduled for the National Electoral Commission (CNE) to release the general election results, which already point to a "victory" for the Frelimo candidate, Daniel Chapo.

Speaking in a broadcast on a social network, he called on the opposition parties to join the protests. In this appeal, he included the FDS (military, police, SISE) to "point the barrels downwards".

He also said that there will be four stages of protests until 25 days have passed, in analogy to the 25 shots fired at Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe.

This call to bring the country to a standstill, with people taking to the streets, comes a day after a general strike. There were social upheavals that resulted in serious injuries from police bullets and several arrests.
