Post-Idai reconstruction: World Bank and ADB have already provided 46 M$ to build 15,000 houses

More than 46 million dollars are available for the construction of 15,000 houses for vulnerable families, mostly in the cities of Beira and Dondo and in Nhamatanda and Búzi, as part of the post-cyclone Idai reconstruction, which in March 2019 destroyed public and private infrastructure and skills.

This figure includes the technical assistance component of UN-Habitant, as a service provider, and the costs of the operations of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Beira and non-governmental organizations elsewhere.

The money was made available by partners, in particular the World Bank and the African Development Bank, and has already enabled the construction of the first 300 homes that meet the standard of resilience against extreme events.

Quoted by the newspaper NewsDuring a World Bank monitoring visit to the projects underway in Beira, the executive director of the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office (GREPOC), Luís Mandlate, acknowledged the slowness of the process, which he argued was due to the bureaucratic demands of the partners, such as consultancy, hiring artisans and environmental impact assessments.

"Of the 25 public infrastructures under construction in the provinces of Sofala and Cabo Delgado, valued at 16 million dollars, we have learned that the most advanced project is the Public Works, Housing and Water Resources building, in the city of Beira, whose level of physical progress is 95% and the least advanced is 70%," he explained.

In fact, the first state buildings that were destroyed by Cyclone Idai will be back in operation later this month, according to assurances from the Post-Cyclone Reconstruction Office.

Meanwhile, with regard to the coastal protection project for the city of Beira, Luís Mandlate said that the contractor is currently being selected following the launch of an international public tender.
