Local elections: European Union suggests improvements in Mozambican legislation

Eleições Autárquicas: União Europeia sugere melhorias na legislação moçambicana

On Monday, the European Union (EU) called on the Mozambican authorities and society to improve electoral legislation in order to deal with the irregularities in the country's electoral processes.

The appeal was launched in Maputo during the 34th Session of the Political Dialogue between the Government of Mozambique and the European Union, during which the parties reviewed the process of the VI Municipal Elections of last October 11, among various issues of common interest.

On the occasion, the Mozambican government gave a detailed description of the stages of the process, from voter registration to the validation and proclamation of the results, according to a joint communiqué issued at the end of the session.

"The government thanked the European Union for its support for the electoral processes in Mozambique," the statement read.

However, the document, quoted by AIM, points out that the EU found some irregularities during the electoral process and "called on the authorities and Mozambican society to commit to the necessary legislative improvements, as recognized in the Constitutional Council's ruling of 24 November 2023."

The Constitutional Council (CC), in its ruling validating the local elections, confirmed the occurrence of a series of irregularities, as a result of which it ordered the vote to be repeated in four municipalities, namely Nacala Porto, in the northern province of Nampula, Gurúè and Milange (Zambézia) and Marromeu (Sofala), these three in central Mozambique.

Voting was repeated this Sunday and in Marromeu the process took place throughout the municipality, while in the others it was in a few polling stations.

The 34th Political Dialogue between the Government of Mozambique and the EU took place under the slogan "Mozambique and the European Union: a consolidated Political Dialogue, elevated to a Partnership Dialogue".
