The Head of State, Filipe Nyusi, believes that the Beira - Machipanda Line, which connects to Zimbabwe, will strengthen economic cooperation between Mozambique and Zimbabwe and the rest of the Southern African Development Community (SADC) countries..

The President of the Republic said that the Machipanda railway line is a project with a major impact on the Mozambican economy and reflects the government's commitment to expanding the rail-port system in order to reduce pressure on the roads.

Filipe Nyusi said that with the rehabilitation and upgrading of the railroad, there has been an increase in freight transport capacity from zero to six million metric tons, to three million metric tons annually.

The Head of State also highlighted the fact that the quality of the tracks allows trains to run at a speed of forty kilometers per hour, compared to thirty kilometers per hour previously.

Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa said that the Machipanda railway line would help improve the business environment in the southern African region and strengthen regional integration in the context of SADC.

The Zimbabwean statesman believes that the railway linking the city of Beira in Sofala to the administrative post of Machipanda in Manica is a true example of regional integration.

"The Mozambican people have shown that they have knowledge and machinery. We can acquire this knowledge and technique in Zimbabwe. I want the work done as soon as possible. We African people, especially Mozambique and Zimbabwe, have the capacity to develop our countries, we have the resources, and most importantly, we have a clear vision of where we want to go," said Emmerson Mnangagwa.

The Machipanda Line, which connects Zimbabwe and Mozambique from the city of Beira in Sofala, cost 200 million dollars and involved 600 workers.

The work, which began in 2018, essentially consisted of eliminating curves with tight radii (many of them unnecessary and with considerable gradients) and which prevented trains from running at the desired speed.
