The president of Renamo today denounced a wave of harassment of his members by the police during the marches contesting the election results, considering that his party will not back down.
"There has been harassment and arbitrary arrests of citizens, as well as invasions and sieges of the Renamo Party's political offices, such as in the cities of Nampula and Maputo, the latter of which even had its roof searched.
"It is inexplicable that in this path of authentic police terrorism against citizens and the state, citizens dressed as civilians are involved, wielding and firing weapons as if they were mercenaries," said the Renamo leader during a press conference held today in Maputo.
Ossufo Momade lamented the silence of the PGR and the head of state, Filipe Nyusi, in the face of the "misdeeds" committed by the Mozambique Republic Police.
"It's also unbelievable that the persecution and killing of citizens doesn't merit any concern from the PGR and even less from the President of the Republic who said the People are my boss," he said.
Renamo goes further and accuses the Mozambican President of trying to "push the country into a new war"
"It worries Mozambicans that Mr. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi, Commander-in-Chief of the Defense and Security Forces, is demonstrating with his voice of command that he intends to push the country into a new war."
At issue is the police repression of marches led by Renamo to protest against the results of the October 11 elections, where Frelimo was announced as the winner in 65 of the 64 municipalities, with the exception of Beira, won by the Democratic Movement of Mozambique.
Ossufo Momade reiterated that his party will not back down until the "electoral truth" is restored, considering that Renamo has evidence (public notices) showing that the party won in several municipalities.
"We urge all lovers of peace, democracy and well-being to remain firm in the struggle to restore the will expressed on October 11, because we are for free, fair and transparent elections," he said.
