The number of people with bank accounts has increased by 26% since 2023, according to Lusa, which cites data from an August statistical report by the Bank of Mozambique.
By June of this year, commercial banks in Mozambique had the equivalent of 30.1 bank accounts for every hundred adults, compared to 23.9 in 2013. Meanwhile, the highest ratio was seen in June 2017, with 36.2 accounts per hundred adults.
Last June, 18.5 women had a bank account out of every 100 adults, compared to 40.9 men.
The document indicates that the number of bank branches per hundred adults has remained almost unchanged, falling by just 0.1. In 2013, the ratio was 4.0 per 100 adults, and at the end of June 2003 it was 3.9.
Between 2013 and 2023, the number of bank cards issued in the country rose from 23.8 to 18.4 per 100 adults by last June.
Automatic teller machines (ATMs) grew slightly to a ratio of 8.3 available for every 100 adults, compared to 8.1 in 2013, while automatic payment terminals (APT/POS) soared to 209.2, compared to 87.8 available for every 100 adults in 2013.
The document concludes that 80% of the country's 154 districts were covered by ATMs, compared to less than half (49.2%) ten years ago.
According to data from the central bank, Mozambique has 15 commercial banks and 12 microbanks, as well as credit cooperatives and savings and credit organizations, among others. (Lusa)
