Strike: This arm wrestling match between the doctors and the government

Greve: Esta instalado braço de ferro entre os médicos e o Governo

The "war" between the medical profession and the government promises to be a soap opera with many chapters and no foreseeable outcome.

After the government reaffirmed yesterday that it would not "give in" to wage demands and that the striking doctors were in danger of not receiving their salaries, the Mozambican Association of Doctors (AMM) today threatened to paralyze all minimum care activities, accusing the government of intimidation and a lack of openness to dialogue.

"In view of our government's stance of intimidation, avoidance of dialogue and failure to fulfill its commitments, we inform you that the medical profession reserves the right to cancel its assignments. No doctor will return to work and the government will have to hire more than 1,500 doctors," said the president of AMM, Milton Tatia, at a press conference in Maputo today.

The government considered the doctors' demands "illegal" and at the same time "strange".

However, AMM considers that the executive's position shows that there is no interest in resolving the problem, noting that the "nobility" of the class's work justifies differentiated treatment.

In addition to threatening to paralyze the minimum assistance in health units, the AMM is considering demanding that the initial list of demands, dated October 28, 2022, be fully complied with, which included many more demands, according to the class.

Doctors have been on strike for more than 30 days, however, covering the minimum services in the health units.

On Friday, the Mozambican Medical Association will hold another general assembly in Maputo to decide whether to extend the strike, which has already been extended once.
