The Maputo Port Development Company (MPDC) is currently carrying out a geological and geotechnical campaign as part of the development of the project to build the Kanyaka Quay Bridge, an important phase of the construction project, in partnership with the Ministry of Transport and Communications (MTC) and the Maputo Municipal Council (CMM).
Boreholes 25 meters deep are currently being drilled and material is being collected for laboratory analysis, as well as on-site tests of the STP type - Simple Reconnaissance Surveys - with the aim of estimating the depth of the piles that will support the future pier bridge.
This study is part of the bridge design project, and will serve as the basis for determining the type of construction as well as the estimated cost of building the Quay Bridge.
The island's jetty has been out of use since October 2013. The impact of the lack of a mooring point for boats on the island has been a cause of great concern for islanders and visitors to the island, with transportation being unsafe and costing more. As part of its social responsibility program, in June 2023 MPDC began studies for the project to build a quay bridge.
The studies will last five and a half months, and after the geotechnical phase (which will be completed in the second week of August), the most suitable solutions will be determined and the execution project will be carried out according to the solution chosen by the MTC and the CMM.
These efforts are combined with the rehabilitation of the Kanyaka vessel, which has been inactive since June 29, 2022, in a joint effort by the MTC, MPDC, CFM and FTC, which is expected to start operating at the end of August.
