French oil and gas multinational TotalEnergies is building a gas processing plant in the town of Afungi, in the village of Palma, Cabo Delgado province. The company suspended (?) its activities in 2021, declaring force majeure due to terrorist incursions. Compensation for some families requires the force majeure to be lifted, while the work progresses.
"Meanwhile, anyone passing through Afungi can see that the construction of the infrastructure where the gas processing plant will be installed is underway, despite the fact that the French company TotalEnergies has not yet lifted the force majeure," reads a document shared by the Center for Democracy and Development (CDD).
This is the infrastructure started by Anadarko on August 5, 2019, and will include two liquefaction units with a capacity of 13.12 million tons per year, he recalls.
According to the NGO, the declaration of force majeure "had no direct impact on the activities linked to the Mozambique LNG project, but left the communities abandoned, especially those that depended on direct support from the project, such as the families still living in Quitupo".
The document notes that families awaiting resettlement are concerned about the delay in paying their compensation, and suggests questioning the progress of some works without the force majeure being lifted.
"One of the conditions set by the company for its resumption is that costs with suppliers of goods and services involved in the project must not increase," reads the note, which recalls that force majeure caused 148 million dollars in damage to private, national and international companies.
