Mozambique needs more means for "early warning" until 2027 and is already mobilizing resources from the AfDB

Moçambique necessita de mais meios para o “aviso prévio” até 2027 e já está a mobilizar recursos junto do BAD

The Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, defends the need to provide the national meteorological and hydrological services with resources to improve their previous systems by 2027.

According to Magala, the lack of these resources not only affects Mozambique, but also challenges all developing countries, where needs are greater and resources are scarce.

Speaking in Geneva, Switzerland, during the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) congress, at an event on the importance and relevance of the early warning system, Magala stressed that it is necessary to invest in integrated systems and solutions, as recommended, for example, by the report of the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) mission to Mozambique after Cyclone Idai, as well as ensuring the functionality and maintenance of the equipment and infrastructures to be installed and involving the private sector and cooperation partners in the financing and implementation of specific solutions.

To this end, Mozambique is mobilizing financial resources from the African Development Bank to install three long-range weather radars, of the seven needed to be set up by 2027, the first of which has already been installed and is working.

According to the Minister of Transport and Communications, Mateus Magala, the country has established a specific unit for flood and drought management, whose aim is to study, analyze, predict and map hydrological risks.
