IMF recommends Mozambique to reduce wage bill

The mission of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) has recommended reducing the annual wage bill in Mozambique's state budget in order to safeguard fiscal and macro sustainability.

Quoted by The CountryPablo L. Murphy, from the IMF, encouraged the government to continue with the reforms in order to become compatible with the approved budget.

According to the IMF, these measures will guarantee the sustainability of the economic recovery, and it has shown its openness to continuing to support the country in creating a favorable environment for economic development.

"The team thanks the Mozambican authorities for their excellent cooperation, dialogue and frank plans during the dialogues," he said.

The Mozambican side at the talks, held in Maputo between April 25 and May 5, requested technical assistance from the IMF in strategic areas such as international reserves management and assistance in improving the management of public finances.

The IMF said that the discussions will continue virtually, through the Office of the Resident Representative in Maputo.
