Pascoal Mocumbi, the former prime minister of Mozambique, died early this morning from a long illness, according to information given to the MZNews team by a source linked to the family.
Pascoal Mocumbi, a doctor by profession, was also a Mozambican politician born on April 10, 1941.
The right-hand man of the former President of the Republic, Joaquim Chissano, Mocumbi held several prominent positions such as Minister of Health, Foreign Affairs and Prime Minister of the Government of Mozambique from 1994 to 2004.
He left office on February 17, 2004 to run for director-general of the WHO, a post to which he was unsuccessful.
He became High Representative of the European and Developing Countries Clinical Trials Partnership (EDCTP), based in The Hague, Netherlands, at the invitation of the World Health Organization.
In July 2005 he was appointed by WHO as a Goodwill Ambassador for maternal, newborn and child health, with a special focus on reducing mortality in the African region.
