The Confederation of Economic Associations (CTA), Mozambique's largest employers' association, has called for "energetic measures" from the Mozambican authorities to curb kidnappings in the country, in reaction to the death of a businessman kidnapped in Maputo.
"As the CTA, we condemn this act and once again call on the authorities to take energetic measures to stop these macabre acts," said Vasco Manhiça, vice-president of the CTA, during a press conference on Tuesday.
Quoted by Lusa, the CTA expressed its "condolences" to the businessman's family, considering that kidnappings "undermine" the "business environment" in Mozambique.
On Tuesday, the Mozambican authorities announced the arrest of a man suspected of being involved in the crime.
The body of the businessman, who was kidnapped over a week ago, was found on Tuesday in Txumene, in Maputo province, in southern Mozambique, with injuries and signs of aggression, but the authorities warned that it was too early to put forward a specific cause of death.
The man was kidnapped on December 14 in front of one of his businesses in the municipality of Matola by an armed group.
A video captured by surveillance cameras at the scene of the crime shows the exact moment when the group, made up of four men, dragged the businessman into a car in broad daylight.
