US-Africa Summit: Joe Biden Promises to Visit Sub-Saharan Africa

Cimeira EUA-África: Joe Biden promete visitar África subsaariana

US President Joe Biden promised yesterday to visit sub-Saharan Africa and advocated permanent representation of the African continent "in every place and every institution" in the world, including the United Nations Security Council and the G20..

Speaking to around 50 African leaders gathered at a summit in Washington, the Democratic leader said he planned to visit sub-Saharan Africa, without specifying a date, in what would be the first visit by a US president to the continent since 2015.

"We're all going to see you and you're going to see a lot of us," Biden told the heads of state and government of the 49 African countries represented at the United States of America (USA)-Africa Summit.

In addition to not giving a date, Biden also did not mention the countries he intends to visit.

Biden would therefore be the first US leader to visit sub-Saharan Africa since former President Barack Obama's 2015 trip to Kenya and Ethiopia.

In his speech, Joe Biden advocated a greater role for Africa on the international stage, saying that the African Union should have permanent representation in global institutions.

"Africa must be at the table in every room and in every institution," he said, specifically mentioning the United Nations Security Council and the G20, which brings together the world's main economic powers.

This new support from the US President adds to his commitment to support a reform of the Security Council, so that it also has a permanent representative from the African continent.

Listing a series of assistances to Africa in terms of security or democratic reforms, Biden once again advocated better governance on the continent, a theme that will have dominated this three-day summit on Africa.

"The United States is totally for Africa and with Africa," said Joe Biden.

After this speech, the President of Senegal, Macky Sall, who also holds the rotating presidency of the African Union, thanked Biden for the gesture.
