G20 GDP grows 1.3% in Q3 and surpasses pre-pandemic

PIB do G20 cresce 1,3% no 3.º trimestre e ultrapassa pré-pandemia

G20 GDP grew by 1.3% quarter-on-quarter in the third quarter of the year, recovering from the 0.3% contraction between April and June, and surpassing pre-pandemic figures, according to the OECD's provisional estimates.

In a statement released today, the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) also said that the expansion in the G20 area was higher than the 0.4% growth in Gross Domestic Product (GDP) in the OECD over the same period.

In year-on-year terms, growth between July and September 2022 was higher than in the same months of 2021, when these economies expanded by 0.8%.

The growth of the G20 economies in the third quarter of 2022 mainly reflected the easing of covid-19 containment measures in China, where GDP rose by 3.9% in the third quarter after contracting by 2.7% in the previous three months.

GDP also rose in the United States of America (0.7%), with the world's two largest economies accounting for three quarters of the G20's 1.3% growth.

South Africa (1.6% after a contraction of 0.7%) and India (0.8%, after stagnating) were the other two countries that recorded increases in their GDP between July and September compared to the second quarter.

Conversely, Japan, the United Kingdom (both -0.2%) and Turkey (-0.1%) recorded GDP contractions in the period under review.

The other eight countries with available data recorded slowdowns in growth, with the most significant in Brazil (0.4% against 1.0% in the previous quarter), Italy (0.5% against 1.1%), South Korea (0.3% against 0.7%) and France (0.2% against 0.5%).

In the third quarter of this year, GDP exceeded the value of the last quarter before the Covid-19 pandemic (fourth quarter of 2019) by 6.0%.

In this parameter, the United Kingdom was the only one of the G20 states that did not recover to pre-pandemic levels (-0.4%), with the OECD attributing this evolution to the revision of previous series. (Notícias ao Minuto)
