State Secretary orders destruction of machambas used for soruma cultivation in Matutuíne

The Secretary of State in Maputo province, Vitoria Diogo, orders the destruction of farms used for the clandestine cultivation of cannabis sativa, known as soruma, in Matutuíne district.

"Here in the Matutuíne district there are soruma farms. It is forbidden! So, I wanted our community leaders to be vigilant in denouncing and when they denounce, the police have to be secretive, because many times people say that we are going to denounce and then the police informs who it was that denounced and later, we have problems of retaliation," she said, quoted by Radio Mocambique.

"We have to fight against alcoholism because our youth is spoiling, they are drinking too much. We have to sensitize young people not to drink and not to take drugs, and we have to work in schools and communities," she added.

Victória Diogo was speaking during the Advisory Council of the administrative post Katembe N'sime, in the scope of a work visit that she made to the Matutuíne district.

In recent times, the consumption of drugs in school grounds has increased dramatically, following the circulation of various drugs, including soruma, in the city and province of Maputo.

A few months ago, the Criminal Investigation Service (SERNIC) and the Republic of Mozambique Police (PRM) dismantled a clandestine factory producing amphetamines in Katembe, Maputo province.
