Seven Mozambicans among 84 suspected of raping music video models

Sete moçambicanos entre 84 suspeitos de violar modelos de videoclips

Seven Mozambicans are among 84 citizens of other nationalities accused of sexually assaulting eight women, from a group of 12 models, during the recording of a music video, on Thursday of last week, in a dump of the Krugersdorp mine, in the province of Gauteng, in South Africa, according to the local police.

Among the suspects, four are from Lesotho, four are from Zimbabwe, one from Cameroon and one from Malawi, according to Fred Kakana, Police Commissioner in RSA, quoted by STV channel.

"They are illegal miners without any documentation," Kakana said.

After the proceedings, the indicted men were taken this Monday to the Krugersdorp courthouse, where there was a crowd of people protesting against the rape of those young women.

South African media said that the victims are in the 19 year old range. Some are from the city of Alexandra and others from Johannesburg.

A source interviewed by eNCA said that it had not yet been possible to speak with the relatives of the victims that a space for 'reflection' still needed to be reserved, even for the community "in a state of shock."

The indictees, including a minor whose indictment was forwarded to juvenile criminal justice, will be presented in court again tomorrow, Wednesday.

At the request of the South African Minister of Police, the suspects now in custody may be subjected to blood tests to prove or rule out the possibility of their involvement in the crime of rape.

Without specifying the source, STV said that the Mozambican authorities have not yet been notified about the case.

The South African ruling African National Congress (ANC) is of the opinion that the bilateral relations between South Africa and Mozambique should not be called into question.

"Despite this heinous crime, we cannot act with violence towards the citizens of our brother country," said Lesego Makhubela, ANC spokesman.

In addition to the crime of raping women, the 84 suspects face charges of illegal mining, violation of immigration law, and possession of goods of questionable provenance.

Gauteng is the province that receives the most citizens from Mozambique for various reasons and is the center of xenophobic attacks.
