Samsung makes smartphones from recyclable material

Samsung's new Galaxy series of smartphones will feature components based on recycled plastic materials, including bottles, fishing nets, and CDs, the technology company announced.

Samsung explains, for example, that it converts nylon fishing nets into small resin pellets, and these are then used to produce the holders where the volume and power buttons on the phones fit.

"Consumers will sooner or later realize that sustainability is the key to differentiating premium smartphone brands," said Forrester analyst Thomas Husson, warning that there is still a lot of work to be done.

On the other hand, CCS Insight's Bem Wood says that "using recycled materials is only one piece of the puzzle," pointing out that the most significant thing is to make equipment more durable over time to avoid regular cell phone replacements.

The launch of this top line will allow Samsung to enjoy an important window of opportunity in the market and establish leadership, "given Huawei's difficulties, the Xiaomi brand's lack of credentials in Europe, and the fact that Apple is not expected to launch the iPhone 14 until later this year," says Husson.

The new Samsung Galaxy S22 line hits the market on February 25.
