More than 4,000 classrooms missing in Sofala province

Sofala province has more than 4,000 classrooms yet to be rebuilt, after the destruction caused by the cyclones of the last three years, affecting 435,000 students, the authorities announced this Wednesday.

"With the passage of Cyclone Idai (2019) alone, 2,713 rooms were destroyed and only 687 were rebuilt," Dilsa Solange, provincial government spokesperson, noted in a statement to journalists.

Storm Chalane (2020) damaged 572 rooms, all of which remain unrepaired, and Cyclone Eloise destroyed 1,027 that "have not yet been moved."

Already this year, Storm Ana "partially destroyed 122," he added.

Accounts done, and adding other bad weather, since 2019 the province has lost 4,434 rooms and only 787 have been rebuilt, the spokeswoman said.

The government is now opting "for the construction of mixed rooms", which join several years, and with materials that allow building "in an accelerated way" to "ensure that the children get out of the tents and are in a safe place", stressed Dilsa Solange.

Three years after Cyclone Idai, central Mozambique is still rebuilding.

The cyclone caused more than 600 deaths, affected one and a half million people, and destroyed homes, schools, health care facilities, the power grid, and the communication network.
