The international vaccine sharing mechanism for covid-19 COVAX has reached 1 billion doses of vaccine distributed against covid-19 in 144 countries, it was announced this Saturday.
The information was released by the president of the Global Alliance for Vaccines (GAVI), which collides the COVAX mechanism, José Manuel Barroso, on the social network Twitter.
"Today COVAX reached the billionth dose of covid-19 vaccine, as part of the largest and most complex global vaccination operation," Durão Barroso wrote, quoted by Lusa.
In this sense, Durão Barroso considers that "a milestone in vaccine equity has been reached, although its progress is now threatened by the Omicron variant and the pace of booster vaccination programs."
The international mechanism for equitable access to the COVAX vaccine is collidered by GAVI, the World Health Organization, and the Coalition for Innovation in Epidemic Preparedness.
The COVAX system was created in an attempt to prevent rich countries from monopolizing access to vaccines, which are still being produced in quantities too small to meet global demand.
Meanwhile, the GAVI president this Saturday recalled the inequality in the rate of vaccination of the world's population, with countries already assigning the third dose of inoculation, while in Africa less than 10% of the population has complete vaccination.
