Government moves forward with project to massify domestic gas to low-income families

The Ministry of Mineral Resources and Energy (MIREME) is developing a project to massify domestic gas for low-income families.

It is an initiative that foresees that by 2025 about 1.4 million small bottles will be made available to low-income families in the provinces of Cabo Delgado, Tete, Nampula, and Zambézia.

According to MIREME, the project contemplates, besides the five to six kilogram bottles, infrastructure such as community kitchens and three gas filling units in Nampula, Tete and Cabo Delgado.

"The idea is to instill in communities that still rely on charcoal and/or firewood to cook food the habit of using gas, which will hopefully result in a migration to this comparatively cleaner and environmentally friendly energy source," said Deputy National Director of Hydrocarbons and Fuels, Jose Muhai.

Costed at $100 million, the project is funded by MIREME's Infrastructure Fund, and may soon also have support from the World Bank, the African Development Bank (AfDB), and the National Investment Bank (NIB).
