World Bank and Kingdom of the Netherlands donate 60 M$ for construction of coastal protection wall in Beira

The World Bank and the Kingdom of the Netherlands are going to finance in 60 million dollars the works of the coastal protection wall in the city of Beira, province of Sofala, an action that arises in the scope of the post-cyclone Idai reconstruction.

To this end, work will start in the second half of next year, a five-year project. This is a barrier that aims to minimize the effects of erosion and flooding, since the city was built below the mean sea level.

Augusto Manhoca, Alderman of Construction and Urbanization in the City Council of that city, revealed that, for this purpose, the Water and Sanitation Infrastructure Administration (AIAS) in the Ministry of Public Works, Housing and Water Resources will launch the respective international public tender.

"The works will include the construction of giant spurs, for which the respective geophysical studies have been conducted for the construction of dikes with a defense essentially to prevent the invasion of sea waters to the continent," advanced the responsible.

Meanwhile, Augusto Manhoca assured that the works in allusion will cover a total extension of 25 kilometers, subdivided into four sections, namely the north of Porto da Beira-Praia Nova; Praia Nova-Palácio dos Casamentos; Palácio dos Casamentos-Farol de Estoril; and Farol de Estoril-Rio Maria.
