Zelensky warns that Russia is preparing for a “big war” in Europe

Zelensky alerta que Rússia prepara-se para “grande guerra” na Europa

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Thursday that there are no signs that Russia “wants to stop” the invasion and warned that the country could be preparing for a “big war” in “2029 or 2030”.

“We need to put more pressure on Russia. According to the situation on the battlefield, we don't see that Russia wants to stop. The problem is that, looking at the Russian military industry, we see that they are increasing their production. And our assessment is that they want to continue this war,” said the Ukrainian President in a post on the X social network.

Zelensky argued that if there is “strong pressure”, Russia “will need a pause”. However, he defended the need to “recognize” that the country led by Vladimir Putin “wants a big war”, which could happen in “2029 or 2030”.

“We believe that if we exert strong pressure, the Russians will need a break. But we have to recognize that they want a big war and prepare to be ready in 2029 or 2030 - in this period - to start a war of this scale. On the European continent. We see this as a great challenge,” he wrote.

In this sense, Zelensky also said that it is necessary to “think” about how to stop Russia in Ukraine and “do everything to diminish its capabilities”.

Zelensky's warning comes a day after Canada imposed new sanctions against Moscow, mainly targeting the Russian energy sector. The Canadian sanctions target 13 individuals and 11 entities, several of which are involved in the development and execution of Russia's drone program, according to a statement from Ottawa.

“Several Russian entities specializing in liquefied natural gas have also been sanctioned, as Russia continues to rely on energy revenues to finance its war of aggression against Ukraine,” added the statement quoted by the international press.

The sanctions also target 100 ships from the so-called “phantom fleet” used by Russia to circumvent existing penalties.

The United States, the European Union and the United Kingdom have already applied similar sanctions.

In recent weeks, Ukraine has faced intensified Russian attacks on its energy infrastructure and the assault by Russian forces on the strategic town of Pokrovsky in the east of the country, as winter approaches and negotiations to end the war stall.
