Analysts do not rule out the possibility of the independent presidential candidate, Venâncio Mondlane, suffering attacks on his physical integrity on his return to Mozambique.
Portuguese academic Fernando Cardoso, quoted by DW, and Mozambican social activist Wilker Dias, quoted by VOA, are unanimous in considering the possibility that there are people interested in annihilating the greatest symbol of the current protest movements in Mozambique.
Mondlane, who left the country following the assassination of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe, and rumors that he would be the next target, recently announced that he would be joining his supporters in Maputo on November 7, the last day of the eight-day march that began on Thursday, October 31.
For Cardoso, now that the Frelimo party has lost its ethics, there will be attempts to assassinate him. Therefore, in his view, the presidential candidate should choose to protect himself.
"I think that the regime would have absolutely no problem doing it and denying that it had done it, because it knows that there is no machine behind Venâncio Mondlane... that he must continue his struggle in a place where he can continue it without being liquidated", either inside or outside the country (where it may be even more difficult).
For his part, Dias believes that Mondlane's arrival in Maputo could put him at risk. He recalled the fact that the Mozambique Republic Police fired tear gas at the presidential candidate in the middle of a press conference during the demonstrations in Maputo.
"There's nothing to stop us from having situations in the future where we could even be attacked, taking advantage of the unrest among the Mozambican population," he said, after predicting that the demonstrations could reach greater heights on the last day of the march.
