Trump recommends 50% tariffs on EU products from June 1st

Trump recomenda tarifas de 50% sobre os produtos da UE a partir de 1 de Junho

US President Donald Trump on Friday recommended a 50% tariff on the European Union, after complaining that negotiations are not going well and that Brussels is "difficult to deal with".

Trump shared these ideas on social media, suggesting that this tax should begin to be applied on June 1st, i.e. in less than a month's time.

The president of the United States said he intends to levy higher import duties on products from the European Union, a longtime US ally, than from China, a geopolitical rival whose tariffs were reduced to 30% this month so that Washington and Beijing could continue negotiations.

Trump has expressed annoyance at the lack of progress in trade negotiations with the European Union. Brussels has insisted on reducing customs duties to zero, despite Trump's public insistence on maintaining a basic tax of 10% on most imports.

"Our discussions with them are going nowhere," Trump posted on Truth Social. "Therefore, I am recommending a 50% direct tariff on the European Union, starting June 1, 2025. No tariffs if the product is built or manufactured in the United States."

Brussels declined to comment on the US president's remarks.

It should be noted that the European Union and the United States have been negotiating a new trade agreement and very recently documents with radical positions have been shared. (Text: Euronews)
