The upsurge in terrorist attacks in the district of Mocímboa da Praia, in Cabo Delgado province, has caused state officials to flee to areas considered safe.
Staff "desertions" due to the uncertain security situation led to the closure of most of the district's schools and most of the health units, with one operating on half-gas.
The district administrator of Mocímboa da Praia said that the death of a teacher had caused concern among professionals and schools had been forced to suspend classes.
"They felt scared and then ended up moving away," said Sérgio Cipriano.
The recent incursions have led to the displacement of more than 13,000 people.
"The population sent some messages to me, with some leaders saying that they didn't want to leave, and then they asked that they wanted the hospital to function, the school to function for their children, commerce to flow, transportation and security. They were told that they would never leave because they didn't want to suffer," he said. (Source: Radio Mozambique)
