Toll rates in Mozambique could be halved from those currently charged on the Mozambique Road Network and Trans African Concession (TRAC) tolls, according to a source from the Mozambican government. MZNews.
It only referred to the amount charged for light vehicles, which should rise from the current 40 meticais to 20 meticais.
Tolls are now being charged with some porosity as a result of Venâncio Mondlane's "presidential decree". He said that tolls should remain suspended until April 27. After that date "we'll see what is decided".
Tolls have stopped being charged as a result of infrastructure vandalization. TRAC even tried to resume collecting the fees, but had to back down after popular protest. REVIMO is collecting, but with relative difficulty, as motorists are still refusing to pay.
Recently, the government said that work is underway with the concessionaires and the population around the tolls to find the best mechanism to overcome the dispute. One of the measures would be to subsidize public passenger transport.
Yesterday, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, stressed that in the next few days the Executive should put forward some measures to ease the economic pressure on citizens, including a review of toll policies.
"The Ministry of Transport and Logistics is currently negotiating with the concessionaires, basically two in the city and Greater Maputo, TRAC and REVIMO, so that we can find solutions to these toll issues. Not only with the concessionaires, but also with the users themselves, because they say, through social networks, etc., that they can even accept paying, but the prices are high... So we need to listen to all opinions and we are sure that we will find better solutions to relieve the pressure from Mozambicans," he said.
