Tanzania blocks access to X after hackers attack on government accounts

Tanzânia bloqueia acesso ao X após ataque de piratas informáticos a contas do Governo

Tanzanian authorities blocked access to the social platform X on Wednesday after cyber-attacks on some accounts of government institutions resulted in false or pornographic publications.

On Tuesday, the official police account was compromised, publishing sexually explicit material and false information about the President's death.

After the authorities claimed that the police account had been hacked, it posted pornographic images that were later deleted. The account also falsely announced the death of President Samia Suluhu Hassan.

"We are looking for those who are spreading false information," the police said in a statement. The account of the telecommunications company Airtel Tanzania was also hacked.

Government spokesman Gerson Msigwa said that Tanzania's cyberspace is safe and considered the attacks a minor incident. He called on citizens to remain calm.

"I assure you that Tanzania is safe and that we will find those responsible," he said.

Users in Dar es Salaam, the country's largest city, were still unable to access the site yesterday unless they used virtual private networks (VPN).
