Hunger has forced dozens of families to abandon their homes in Sofala province and move to neighboring areas of Manica province, say the authorities, quoted by the BBC.
They also say that some families are harvesting wild fruits and tubers to survive after the drought destroyed crops in some areas of Sofala.
District official Cândido Zeca, responsible for economic affairs in the badly hit area of Chemba, admits that not enough has been done to help those in need, but says that food aid and agricultural resources are on the way.
