This Thursday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, the President of the Republic, Daniel Chapo, expressed his enthusiasm for the Standard Gauge railway project, a modern electric train line, considering it an inspiring example for the countries of southern Africa.
Chapo made these statements after a visit to the railroad's Main Station, where the Head of State was accompanied by the First Lady, Gueta Selemane Chapo.
"It's a good impression, we think these are very important projects for the development of our region," he said, stressing the impact of the Tanzanian rail project on mobility, safety and economic dynamism, quoted in a press release from the presidency.
The President of the Republic also stressed that the initiative, which began during the presidency of John Pombe Magufuli, aims to integrate the countries of the region, going beyond national borders.
During the tour of the station, the statesman emphasized that the electric railroad allows people to travel in "perfect conditions", highlighting aspects such as safety, speed and relief from road traffic.
"The level of the roads is not the same as the level of an electric train, which is why we also think it's a very important project for the development of the country, the cities and boosting the economy," he said.
Asked about the possibility of Mozambique adopting a similar solution, the Head of Government was peremptory: "Yes, we are already working on this project".
He also recalled that the initiative is already public knowledge and has been eagerly followed. "You've already heard [...] that we're working flat out to see if we can start materializing the project," he said, reiterating the government's commitment to advancing modern solutions to urban mobility challenges.
Pragmatically, the government official admitted that the project could begin in a pilot phase, focusing on the Greater Maputo region.
"It may not start on a national scale right away, but at least Greater Maputo, to solve the transportation problems in Greater Maputo," he explained. The link between Maputo, Matola and Marracuene was identified as a priority to ease traffic in the capital.
"We think that in the first phase, the issue related to the Maputo-Matola, Maputo-Marracuene link is very important for relieving traffic congestion in the country's capital, a project of this kind and this size," concluded the Mozambican President, highlighting the Executive's long-term vision for modernizing transport infrastructure.
On the same day, the President of the Republic visited the Historical Center for African Liberation, an institution that preserves the memory of the struggles for independence on the continent.
President Chapo's participation in this activity symbolized the strengthening of historical and political ties between Mozambique and Tanzania, on the eve of the end of his official visit to the neighbouring country.
