RENAMO directs former guerrillas to hold conference on party's situation

RENAMO orienta antigos guerrilheiros a realizar conferência sobre a situação do partido

The Mozambican National Resistance (RENAMO) has instructed the Association of Combatants in the Struggle for Democracy (ACOLDE) to urgently hold a national conference to discuss the group's concerns and other internal party matters.

"The fighters in the struggle for sovereignty are organized in an association, for this very reason, and part of these same fighters are those who are on the premises of the national headquarters, and the others are not present, so they are directed to convene this national conference where, together, they can discuss the internal life and seek a solution for our organization," said Saíde Fidel, a member of Renamo's National Council.

The former RENAMO guerrillas are camped out at the party's headquarters in Maputo city, where they have closed down their activities, and say that they will not leave until the party's president, Ossufo Momade, is removed from office.

He explained that one of the strategies to tame the intransigence of the combatants will be to hold such a conference.

"The way to solve this problem lies in the dialog that is expected to take place at the conference. They won't be able to leave, but the conference will dictate when decisions are made," he noted.

Regarding the President's resignation, he declined to put forward any positions, but noted that Ossufo Momade was elected at the congress and that the demanding part was not the congress itself.
