The final report on the causes and consequences of the road accidents that left 36 people dead last Monday (18) in the provinces of Maputo and Gaza, southern Mozambique, will be published in 15 days.
According to Rádio Moçambique, a multi-sectoral team of road safety experts is currently working on the ground, gathering data and evidence in order to produce detailed information about the accidents.
The technical administrator at the National Road Transport Institute (INATRO), Paulo Zunguze, said that the report will give indications on the strategies that the country should follow in order to stop the bloodshed on national roads.
Zunguze believes that the fight against road accidents requires the involvement of everyone, namely the public and private sectors and the population in general.
"We've witnessed an accident with a major impact like this one, which has taken away all our peace of mind to such an extent that, coupled with all the work being done on implementing the short-term safety plan, I think we have something to redefine and really see what approach we're going to take and, as you can see, this couldn't be possible without involving the private sector as well," he said.
At the moment, said the source, "we have the carriers here and, above all, the long-haul segment, both international and inter-provincial. All we could see from yesterday (19) is that there is work to be done collectively, so that as much as possible we can give the best response to this situation."
Zunguze stressed that accidents can happen, but they must not result in deaths or serious injuries and concluded that, "this is the commitment we must have".
Also on Wednesday, the Secretary of State for Transport, Chinguane Mabote, worked in the districts of Chibuto and Bilene with various players in this sector to find solutions to reduce the wave of road accidents on the roads in this part of the country.
