PGR - Murder of Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe shrouded in "much speculation"

PGR – Assassinato de Elvino Dias e Paulo Guambe envolto em “muitas especulações”

More than six months after the murder of lawyer Elvino Dias and political activist Paulo Guambe, the case is still unresolved.

The Attorney General of the Republic (PGR), Américo Letela, said in parliament today that it was still necessary to combine the data gathered in the investigations, as there was a lot of speculation about the motive for the crime. The case is already going through the legal process at the PGR, he said.

"In this case, there is a lot of speculation about the motives behind this crime, but it is up to the investigation to explore all the lines and determine the one that leads to the search for the material truth. The elements we have at our disposal point to the need to combine all the lines of investigation, the sharing of which is not permitted by law, given the stage of the case," he explained.

Elvino Dias and Paulo Guambe were martyred in Maputo city center late on the evening of October 18, 2024, after the presidential and legislative elections of October 9. At the time, Dias was advising the then presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane. Guambe belonged to the Optimist Party for the Development of Mozambique (PODEMOS). Mondlane ran as an independent candidate, but with PODEMOS support for parliament. Mondlane claimed victory, but did not make it to the presidency. PODEMOS won around 40 seats in the Assembly of the Republic.
