OTM Central Union promises reactive measures to national bus attacks in South Africa

OTM Central Sindical promete medidas reactivas a ataques de autocarros nacionais na África do Sul

The Mozambican trade union movement says it is concerned about the prevalence of attacks on vehicles with Mozambican license plates in neighbouring South Africa and warns that, if the situation continues, it could mobilize workers for reactive measures.

The warning was given on Thursday by the general secretary of the Organization of Mozambican Workers - Trade Union Central (OTM), who said it was time to put an end to the situation.

"We, as a trade union movement, reserve the right to mobilize workers to make it impossible to use the EN4 (the main road linking Mozambique to South Africa), where hundreds of their trucks come to our ports every day. Because we are a serious and non-violent trade union movement, we are not going to burn anyone's trucks, but we can mobilize other trade union mechanisms to make the use of our services impossible," said Alexandre Munguambe, secretary of OTM, quoted by VOA.

In a speech with messages for the executive, Munguambe said that "the Mozambican government has to do its part to protect every Mozambican, wherever they are".

For its part, the government is calling for calm and stresses that it is working with the Pretoria authorities to ensure that the situation is resolved once and for all.
