UN and AU strengthen partnership for peace and security in Africa

ONU e UA reforçam parceria para paz e segurança em África

The United Nations and the African Union announced this Thursday that they are working in coordination to promote peace, security and sustainable development in Africa, which is struggling with the persistence of armed conflicts.

The proposal is to align the development agendas with the UN's Agenda 2030 and the AU's Agenda 2063 in order to create a joint, sustainable strategy capable of promoting long-term political stability.

For the United Nations and the African Union, the aim is to seek structural solutions, not just emergency responses.

According to the African Union Commission, while it is ambitious to achieve a peaceful Africa by 2030, the continent still faces deep roots of instability that will require more time to resolve.

The UN points out that it is essential that the flow of arms is stopped on the continent and that humanitarian aid quickly reaches civilians at risk.

In order to put an end to the “historical injustice”, the UN has defended the need for permanent seats for African countries on its Security Council, so that the continent can be recognized as a protagonist in the formulation of global decisions that directly impact its own stability.
