The President of the Republic challenged the new Attorney General to fight organized crime, transnational crime, corruption and asset recovery.
"You need to bear in mind that the current challenges facing the Public Prosecutor's Office include, among others, strengthening the capacity of the central offices for combating organized and transnational crime, combating corruption and recovering assets, which are decisive entities for containing the spread of legal types of crime associated with organized crime.
"We also hope that, in his actions, he will bear in mind that it is necessary to be more assertive in the prosecution of crimes that attack the security of the state," said Filipe Nyusi yesterday, during the swearing-in of Américo Letela to the post.
The Head of State also said that "the challenge remains focused on the promotion of human and humanitarian rights, in particular of people in situations of vulnerability and deprivation of liberty, and on monitoring compliance with the law, with a focus on the defense of minors, the absent and incapacitated, as well as collective and diffuse rights"
For the Head of State, achieving this goal will only be possible by strengthening the training of magistrates and investigators from the National Criminal Investigation Service, SERNIC.
Meanwhile, in statements to the press, the new attorney general pointed to money laundering as a major challenge that the institution will continue to deal with.
"There is an urgent need for bolder measures, because we feel that there is a lot of illegal withdrawal of capital and this impoverishes the state's finances," he said.
He revealed that there are currently a number of cases in progress and that more than 800 million dollars have been illegally expatriated.
