Mozambique could export 160,000 tons of raw cashew nuts this year, exceeding the estimated marketing target of 152,000 tons of this cash crop.
The information was provided by the director-general of the Almond Institute of Mozambique (IAM), Ilídio Bande, quoted by the radio station, Rádio Moçambique.
"It's been a very good campaign. It's not over, but we're sure we'll exceed 160,000 tons, which is already very good," said Bande.
The source said that the quantity will bring significant gains to producers, traders and exporters, since the reference price for the current campaign is 45 meticais per kilogram (less than a dollar), compared to 35 meticais last year.
For now, the current challenge, according to him, is to improve the quality and promotion of Mozambican almonds, with a view to becoming more competitive on the international market.
"These new dynamics that we want to be driven by the regulation will enable us to reach greater heights very quickly. We are convinced that, with these reforms, we will be able to go further, because the country has great potential for this," he added.
