The governments of Mozambique and Malawi want to simplify and modernize the mobility of cross-border communities. To this end, work is underway to introduce the "E-Pass", a card that will facilitate commercial transactions between the two nations and unlock new economic opportunities.
According to a Radio MozambiqueThe initiative has the financial backing of the World Bank under the Southern Africa Trade and Connectivity Project, which quotes Mozambique's high commissioner in Malawi, Alexandre Manjate.
"E-Pass is a new system that could facilitate the movement of people and goods, as well as reducing delays in the crossing of small goods at the borders between the two countries, which will increase the volume of products traded," explained Alexandre Manjate.
The diplomat said that the electronic pass is in line with the Mozambican executive's goal of promoting bilateral and regional development by supporting small traders along the border.
Last year, Mozambique and Malawi signed an agreement in the Malawian capital, Lilogwe, to simplify cross-border trade procedures, with the aim of improving the flow of trade between the two countries. The memorandum represented an important milestone in economic and diplomatic relations between the two neighboring territories and strategic partners in the southern African region.
With the implementation of the agreement, the two African countries will be able to export and import up to 47 agricultural and manufactured products, without the imposition of customs duties, for amounts not exceeding one thousand dollars.
