World's largest ship, "Icon of the Seas" to make maiden voyage in January

Maior navio do mundo, “Icon of the Seas” fará primeira viagem em Janeiro

Finnish contractor Meyer Turku, which specializes in maritime leisure activities, has just announced that its masterpiece will make its maiden voyage in January next year.

Manufactured in Finland, the maritime transport has the capacity to carry 5610 passengers and 2350 crew members.

The Icon of the Seas is 5 times larger than the Titanic, weighing 250,800 tons while the Titanic weighed 50,210 tons.

According to a website specializing in such matters, thousands of people have already booked their tickets (the price per person is around 2,000 euros) to be among the first passengers to board the ship.

"Our protagonist, as we say, has just reached an important milestone in the construction process: it sailed for the first time in the open sea and successfully completed the first round of tests in a real scenario," reads the company's note.

During the 36-hour tests, the cruise ship was accompanied by four tugboats weighing between 37 and 60 tons. In addition, the company explains, more than 2,000 employees were tasked with checking the functioning of all systems and components. From the integrity of the hull to the engines, steering and even noise levels.

The manufacturer also says that towards the end of the year, if the established schedule progresses as expected, another round of tests will be carried out, which will leave the Icon of the Seas with all the necessary guarantees to begin commercial operations.

In other words, it will become one of the most precious elements of Royal Caribbean, which has boldly taken advantage of the sustained growth of the cruise market in recent years.
