Insecurity and climatic events affect tourism in Cabo Delgado

Insegurança e eventos climáticos condicionam o turismo em Cabo Delgado

Tourism in Cabo Delgado province is facing severe limitations, especially the collapse of leisure and vacation tourism. According to the vice-president of the Cabo Delgado Tourism Association, Óscar Soares, the scenario is conditioned by insecurity and adverse events that have marked recent years.

"Tourism in Cabo Delgado at the moment is practically only for business and work. There is very little demand for leisure and vacation tourism, due to the situation we all know. After COVID-19, we had the cyclone and now it's the insurgency that has affected various areas of the province," he explained.

In a publication by Zumbo FM NewsThe source revealed that the city of Pemba is currently the only point considered accessible for visitors.

"The areas that are more or less accessible for tourism in Cabo Delgado are practically only the city of Pemba. There is still some activity in the area of accommodation, restaurants and leisure, in a safe and efficient environment. The tourist islands are closed or shut down. In other districts there are some boarding houses or residences, but they are used more for work," he said.

He also revealed that the number of international tourists is quite small, with most of the visits being motivated by the work of non-governmental organizations or technicians from other provinces. "We don't have exact figures for tourists who have entered since January, but I can assure you that there are very few international tourists. What we have seen more of is work tourism, with NGOs and technicians coming from other provinces."
