INE estimates that the cost of living in Mozambique decreased in May

INE considera que o custo de vida em Moçambique diminuiu em Maio

Mozambique experienced deflation in May, compared to the previous month. The information was provided by the National Institute of Statistics (INE).

According to this official body, the price of the basket that serves as the calculation for the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in the country decreased by 31 basis points from April to May. This means then that there was a monthly decrease of 0.31%.

The CPI shared a bulletin which read that "the food and non-alcoholic beverages division was the most prominent, contributing about -0.34%" in price changes.

Analyzing the main Mozambican cities, INE concluded that Beira registered a price drop of "around 0.79" in May. In Maputo, the cost of the CPI basket fell by 0.20%. In Nampula there was a reduction of 0.16%.
