One person died and seven others were injured by gunfire on Thursday at the Venâncio Mondlane reception, according to the Director of the Emergency Service at Maputo Central Hospital (HCM). There were also two others injured by bladed weapons in the riots.
"[The dead man] is a patient who was transferred from an outlying general hospital, in a very critical condition and did not resist due to the severity of his injuries, and lost his life, while we were doing our utmost to save him," said Dino Lopes.
He also said that "given the characteristics of the injuries, it is possible that [the death] was caused by a firearm wound, a bullet in the cervical region".
He described how the patient was bleeding profusely and arrived in a state of severe shock.
Venâncio Mondlane arrived in Maputo on Thursday, after two and a half months leading post-election demonstrations from exile.
