The First Lady of the Republic, Gueta Selemane Chapo, visited the Pediatrics Department of Maputo Central Hospital (HCM) on Monday afternoon, where she showed solidarity with the children who were hospitalized, especially the case of Siamese twins from Angoche district, Nampula province.
A press release from the Office of the First Lady states that during the visit, the wife of the President of the Republic assured the mother of the babies of her institutional support and promised to build a decent home for the family.
"We came here to visit our mother who had Siamese daughters [...], and also to give our support as the Office of the First Lady, because our area of activity is the social area and we have to ensure the well-being of our children, our elderly, people with disabilities," said Gueta Chapo, quoted in the note, after talking to family members and health professionals.
The case of the Siamese twins gained national attention after a television report portrayed the difficulties faced by the family, who live in Angoche. Sensitized, the First Lady went to HCM to closely monitor the situation and reiterate her office's commitment to the social protection of the most vulnerable populations.
"We're here because we saw the report that came from the province of Nampula, in the district of Angoche and we saw the situation of our mother and our baby and we came to visit and not only that, we also visited other children who are here to receive medical treatment," she said.
President Chapo's wife was satisfied with the level of care provided at the HCM and highlighted the technical capacity of the national professionals.
"We are happy to know that our children, our babies who were born with this condition will be treated locally with our doctors, our health professionals are prepared to be able to resolve this situation," he stressed.
During her visit, the First Lady had the opportunity to talk to the children in hospital and their carers, who gave her words of appreciation for the treatment they receive at the health unit. "I spoke to the children, I also spoke to their mothers and they said that they are being well looked after," she said.
The mother of the Siamese twins took the opportunity to ask for housing support. In response, Gueta Chapo pledged to build a house in the Angoche district.
"The mother who has two daughters also asked for support, which is the construction of a decent house and we promised that we will build the residence, this in the district of Angoche, so that she can live and be in better conditions with her daughters."
As well as institutional support, the visit was marked by the delivery of donations to the children in hospital, including food and hygiene products.
"We also brought yogurt, we brought fruit, we also brought milk, we brought diapers, among other goods to be able to support our children," she said.
At the end of the visit, the First Lady reaffirmed her office's commitment to continuing to provide social assistance.
"We're going to continue to support the children, support the vulnerable, the people who need it most, we're here for that, we're going to work," he concluded.
