Government to spend $250 million to create exclusive lane for public transport in Greater Maputo

Governo vai desembolsar 250 milhões de dólares para criar faixa exclusiva de transportes públicos no Grande Maputo

Public passenger transport (chapas) will now run in an exclusive lane in the Greater Maputo region and, to this end, the government launched the MOVE Maputo project this Thursday, valued at 250 million dollars.

The Maputo Metropolitan Agency (AMT) will implement the project, which is financed by the World Bank, writes the daily Notícias.

The initiative is expected to enable greater mobility and interconnectivity between the cities of Maputo, Matola and the towns of Boane and Marracuene.

At the launch of the project, Transport Minister Mateus Magala said that passenger transport will be able to move around more easily, making journeys more flexible and reducing congestion on the roads.

"The goal is to ensure that the system is fully operational and able to offer quality services by July 2026," the Minister predicted.

The first roads to benefit from the project will be Baixa-Magoanine and Zimpeto-Matola Gare, and will include cycle paths and drainage ditches.

Magala said that public passenger transport operators will benefit from training in urban mobility.
