Last year, the government failed to pay a debt of 3.4 billion Meticais. Because of the non-payment of the debt in referenceAccording to the Annual Public Debt Report, the government has been limited in its revenue collection due to instability following the election period.

The list of the main creditors of the debt that the government failed to pay last year includes the following countries: Portugal (the largest creditor), which is owed just over 1.8 billion meticais; the International Monetary Fund, which is owed around 718.7 million meticais; Russia, which is owed around 259.9 million meticais; the Islamic Development Bank, which is owed around 206.2 million meticais; and India, which is owed around 102.7 million meticais.

"The transition of these amounts to 2025 implies additional pressure on the state's treasury, given the increase in financial commitments that will have to be honored in the next budget year. This challenging scenario accentuates the urgent need to implement effective measures to mitigate the risks associated with debt servicing," says the government's report, quoted in the newspaper "O País".

The stock of overdue debt worsens when you add in 394.3 million dollars of outstanding commitments to creditors who are not considering debt relief for the country under the terms agreed with the Paris Club, namely: Libya (253.38 million dollars); Angola (61.45 million dollars); Bulgaria (57.8 million dollars); and Poland (21.7 million dollars).

The document also states that the government is negotiating with these creditors to find coordinated solutions for settling the debts.
