Government approves last funds to support victims of Hulene dumpslide

Governo aprova última verba para apoiar vítimas do deslizamento da lixeira de Hulene

Government spokesman Inocêncio Impissa announced today the disbursement of 2,520,000 meticais to support the families who were victims of the garbage slide at the Hulene landfill.

According to the government official, the money comes from revenue collected by the land and environment sector for the Maputo Municipal Council.

Speaking to the press after the 16th session of the executive, Impissa recalled that these disbursements were phased in, but that the recent approval is for the last financial disbursement to support the issue of rents for these families.

"According to the provision approved today, this [tranche] should be the last to effectively conclude this process, which has been dragging on for a few years now, and which the government has been approving every year on an extraordinary basis. However, the new government believes that this issue must be concluded and ended, and this chapter must go down in history," he explained.

Seven years ago, on February 18, 2018, the collapse of the Hulene dump in Maputo city killed 17 people. The survivors left their homes, with promises of being resettled in another neighborhood. In the meantime, they were forced to rent houses and found it difficult to meet their commitments.

As of March last year, Maputo Municipality owed around 6,360,000 meticais to more than a hundred families affected by the incident. The mayor of Maputo, Razaque Manhique, assured at the time that there was money to solve the problem and that it would be transferred to the families in the following days.

"There is money earmarked for this and it should be delivered to those affected as soon as possible," he said.
