Filipe Nyusi and Ossufo Momade maintain differences on district elections in 2024

Filipe Nyusi e Ossufo Momade mantém divergências sobre eleições distritais em 2024

The President of the Republic and the leader of Renamo, in opposition, maintain their differences over the holding of district elections in 2024, even after a meeting held on Wednesday, 8, in Maputo, in which they also analysed the process of Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration of the former guerrillas by the end of this month.

At the end of the meeting, the president of Renamo, Ossufo Momade, reiterated that his party defends the holding of elections as agreed by the Head of State and the late partridge leader Afonso Dhlakama.

"What we were hoping for was to be able to hold district elections because it's provided for in the Constitution of the Republic and I wouldn't like to see the country making changes to the law so that we can change the elections, so we're going to discuss it to get our position across to the President of the Republic, but we'd like to be able to have district elections in 2024," said Momade.

For his part, Filipe Nyusi said he was confident that the best solution would be found, taking into account its financial impact.

"We exchange views on what is right and good, in this case we looked at the technical aspects, the aspects of our decentralization itself and the financial issues," Nyusi stressed, quoted by VOA.

Also on the table at the talks was the conclusion of the Disarmament, Demobilization and Reintegration process for the Renamo men, with Ossufo Momade reiterating "the hope that the government will approve the decree so that they (the guerrillas) can have their pensions, this is a given".

Filipe Nyusi considered that "the DDR process is a commitment by the government and Renamo, this case has been considered an example and we cannot miss this opportunity to contribute to the pacification of our country and to serve as a case study for other countries that need the peace that is necessary".

It should be remembered that in December 2022 the closure of Renamo's last base in the Serra da Gorongoza failed, after Ussufo Momade expressed his dissatisfaction with the alleged failure to comply with the agreements made in August 2019.
