Filipe Nyusi calls for an end to violence and destruction of infrastructure in the country

Filipe Nyusi apela ao fim da violência e destruição de infra-estruturas no país

The President of the Republic, Filipe Nyusi, called yesterday, Friday (29), for an end to the destruction of public and private infrastructure and the killing of police and civilians during demonstrations called by presidential candidate Venâncio Mondlane.

The appeal was made during the inauguration of the National Social Security Institute in the southern province of Gaza.

"We're going to stop the destruction, we're going to need it and we're going to have a burden on our conscience for what we should have let evolve and didn't, because there are countries that no longer know and have no way out because they've plunged into confusion and it's all death, destruction and looting," said Filipe Nyusi, calling for an end to the killing of civilians and police.

In a publication by VOANyusi also said that citizens need a "cool head" to resolve the post-election tension, calling on young people to focus on the country's development. The President of the Republic pointed to Gaza as an example of this development.

"If it were nothing, nobody would care about this country. Nobody sows corn on the cob, nobody. It won't sprout. Since it's fertile land, you young people have to do your bit," he said.

The Mozambican head of state remembered the civilian and police victims. "It doesn't look good for people to be dying because they were raped by the Defense and Security Forces or the other way around, but I believe in doing your part. If everyone does just a little of what we can do, this will stop!".

Three people died and another 10 were shot on the 27th and 28th, according to data from the Mozambican non-governmental organization Plataforma Eleitoral Decide. The NGO also points out that five people were arrested as a result of the protests against the election results.
